When does morning sickness start?

Usually as a pregnancy doctor I see morning sickness symptoms between weeks 6 and 18. Still, 20-30% of women don’t have morning sickness and still deliver healthy babies. You could feel nauseated early in the morning followed by vomiting. What causes morning sickness?

Causes of morning sickness are usually smells & tastes primary. Pregnancy studies done at Cornell reveal that morning sickness is a mechanism for protecting mother and embryo. They found that morning sickness is an aversion to potentially harmful foods to help preserve the mother's immune system, since it's already lowered to keep the baby in utero safe from her immunity trying to attack the baby by her uterus. Cold Be Gone is a great way to naturally not get sick by using the power of honey in your nose creating a "booger biome."

Perceived heightened sense of smell when women gag at certain odors.  This is because the mom has reduced defenses against food-borne pathogens protecting mom and baby from toxins, microorganisms, and other teratogenic (or fetal organ deforming) chemicals.  According to the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, “pregnant women have olfactors processes different from non-pregnant women.” 40% of chemical senses cooking odor, cigarette smoke, spoiled food, and perfume. Foods like beans, spaghetti sauce, fish, and eggs. 14% have phantom odor that resemble feces. Coping is avoidance of strong odors or eating something salty, eating smaller meals more frequently. Most heightened sense of smell resolves by the 2nd trimester.

Is morning sickness a good sign?

The term morning sickness is a misnomer for you can actually experience vomiting anytime of the day. Less than 2% of women with morning sickness had nausea and vomiting only in the morning. Women who experience morning sickness are significantly less likely to miscarry than those women who do not.  Research has also found that women who vomit are significantly less likely to miscarry than those who experience just nausea. Morning sickness reminds some of you what it feels like to be hangover every day, where you can have waves of nausea at any time not to mention cramps, diarrhea, and even heartburn.

How to stop vomiting in pregnancy home remedies?

Natural is always best. Foods like ginger, lemons, or the pectin of apples are useful but when I’m sick the last thing I want is to put anything down in my mouth as food increases stomach acids. Women during pregnancy have an increase in acid reflux, hence the tums next to the nightstand.
